The Louvre upgrade

The Louvre upgrade project was designed to meet two objectives. First, the long linear set of museum buildings in a U formation had to be reorganized around a central focus, namely the pyramid in the central courtyard, to facilitate visitor traffic and access to collections.
Second, it was necessary to enhance the museum’s integration into the urban landscape. An above-ground car-park was transformed into a public square featuring a fountain. Passages connecting the various buildings, which were formerly closed to the public, were opened. As much as 75,000 m2 of new surface was added to the Louvre, which resulted in partial funding for the museum and in renewal for the centre of Paris.

Weight of the pyramid: 180 t,  Number of people on the worksite: 1,200
Floor surface: 75,000 m2 over three underground levels, Grey concrete: 90,000 m3, White architectonic concrete: 5,000 m3, Casings: 180,000 m3, Pre-stressing steel: 500 t
